Wednesday 8 June 2022

Â鶹ÊÓƵ (RCM) countertenor Hugh Cutting has been named in BBC Radio 3’s New Generation Artists list for 2022-24. The scheme nurtures young musical talent with two years of performance and collaboration opportunities with BBC orchestras and other New Generation Artists.

Hugh Cutting is currently undertaking the Artist Diploma in Opera, studying with vocal professors Sally Burgess and Audrey Hyland. In November 2021 he won the Kathleen Ferrier Award, the first countertenor in the competition’s history to do so. In July 2022, Hugh will be performing the principal role of ‘Refugee’ in Jeremy Sams' production of Flight in the RCM’s Britten Theatre.

Head of Vocal and Opera, Nick Sears says: ‘Hugh is an exceptional artist in every respect, and we are all absolutely delighted he has been selected as a BBC New Generation Artist where his talent will be appreciated and enjoyed by an ever-widening pool of admirers.’

Hugh was chosen for the scheme alongside six other artists from around the globe. Previous RCM musicians to be chosen for the scheme include violinist Alina Ibragimova, pianist Pavel Kolesnikov and the Consone Quartet.

Launched in 1999, the New Generation Artists scheme provides musicians with opportunities to develop their live and recorded performances, including broadcasts with the BBC orchestras, lunchtime concerts from around the UK and regular studio recordings.
